Therapist Los Angeles, licensed providers region by region

Los Angeles is less one city than a collection of regions joined by freeways, and a therapist twelve miles away can mean a forty minute drive. The most useful way to search here is by the part of town you live or work in. NearbyTherapy lists licensed providers across Los Angeles from the federal NPI registry, with claimed, verified profiles shown first.

Licensed therapists in Los Angeles

First come the therapists who have claimed their profile: they carry a "License verified" badge and list their own specialties, approaches, fees, accepted insurance and session format, and they receive inquiries through the profile. Then comes "More licensed providers in Los Angeles", every other provider from the NPPES NPI Registry in the area, shown with name, credential, practice address and phone. Their details are not yet confirmed by the provider, so call to ask about availability.

Searching across a city of regions

  • Westside: Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, Westwood, Brentwood and Culver City, many practices in small office buildings along major boulevards.
  • Eastside and central: Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Echo Park, Koreatown and Downtown.
  • San Fernando Valley: Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino and Burbank.
  • Further out: Pasadena, the South Bay and Long Beach each have their own concentration of offices.

Some of these are separate cities inside Los Angeles County, and the search treats them that way, so try a few nearby ZIP codes. Many Angelenos book video sessions for weekdays and keep in person visits for when the drive is easier.

A therapist generally must be licensed in the state where you are located during the session. A California license covers you anywhere in the state.

California licenses in Los Angeles

The Board of Behavioral Sciences licenses LMFTs, LCSWs and LPCCs, and the Board of Psychology licenses psychologists. You will also see associate registrations (AMFT, ASW, APCC), clinicians gaining supervised hours whose profile should name a supervisor. The state overview is on therapists in California.

Medi-Cal, private plans and self-pay

Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program. Depending on the kind of care, mental health services for Medi-Cal members may come through a Medi-Cal managed care plan or through the county mental health plan run by Los Angeles County, and the plan can tell you which applies. Private plans range from narrow networks to out of network benefits. Fees for private pay sessions are set by each clinician; nationwide, broad estimates often put them between about 100 and 250 USD per session, with wide variation. Some associates and community clinics offer lower fees. Read therapist that takes insurance and Medicaid.
