Each state page explains the license types used in that state, which board issues them, the name of the state Medicaid program and the cities we cover in detail.

How this therapist directory is built

Many directories only show the clinicians who pay to be listed, so some neighborhoods look empty even when plenty of licensed people practice there. NearbyTherapy starts from the other end. Our listings come from the public federal NPPES NPI Registry maintained by CMS, the national register in which health care providers who bill insurance obtain their National Provider Identifier. We refresh that data every month.

From the registry we keep individual providers whose registered specialty is mental health: psychologists, professional and mental health counselors, addiction counselors, clinical social workers and marriage and family therapists. Deactivated NPIs are hidden.

  • Unclaimed listings show only what the registry holds: name, credential, practice address, city, state, practice phone, NPI, and the license number and state when the registry has them. They carry an "Unclaimed" badge.
  • Claimed profiles are filled in by the therapist: specialties, approaches, insurance, fees, in person or online. They carry a "License verified" badge and an inquiry form.
  • We do not store mailing addresses, session notes, or photos of providers who have not claimed their profile.

Why the state matters

Therapists are licensed by states, not by the federal government, and each state names its licenses a little differently. A counselor may be an LPC in Texas, an LCPC in Illinois, an LMHC in New York and an LPCC in California. For online sessions, a therapist generally must be licensed in the state where you are located during the session, which is why the directory is organized by state first.

Is the therapist directory free to use

Yes. Patients search for free and no account is needed. Therapists who want to manage their profile and receive inquiries choose a paid plan.

Are unclaimed listings real therapists

Every listing comes from the public NPPES NPI Registry. An unclaimed listing means the provider has not yet added details to NearbyTherapy, so you see registry information only and can call the practice phone directly.

How do I correct or remove a listing

Use request a correction or removal. Requests are handled within 2 business days, and a removal hides the listing once the email is confirmed and the NPI matches.

Can I search in a state without its own page

Yes. Type any city or ZIP code in the United States into the search box and you see the licensed providers registered there.

If you need help right now

NearbyTherapy is a directory, not a crisis or emergency service. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline). In an emergency, call 911. More options are on our crisis page.
