Therapist San Diego, licensed providers from the coast to the county line

San Diego is home to a large military community, several universities and neighborhoods that stretch from the beaches to the inland hills, so people come to a therapist search with very different needs. NearbyTherapy shows every licensed provider registered in your part of the county, from the federal NPI registry, and lets claimed profiles tell you the rest.

Neighborhoods and nearby communities

In the city, many practices sit in Hillcrest, North Park, Mission Valley, Kearny Mesa, Point Loma, La Jolla and Downtown. North County has its own cluster in Carlsbad, Oceanside, Encinitas and Escondido, and the South Bay in Chula Vista and National City. Freeway access on the 5, the 8 and the 15 often matters more than straight line distance.

Military families and veterans

With Naval Base San Diego, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Camp Pendleton nearby, many families use TRICARE. Some civilian therapists accept TRICARE and many do not, so ask before booking. Military OneSource and VA services are separate options that service members and veterans can contact directly. A civilian therapist on NearbyTherapy can tell you whether they work with military families.

Licenses and online sessions

San Diego therapists hold the same California licenses as the rest of the state: LMFT, LCSW and LPCC from the Board of Behavioral Sciences, and psychologist licenses from the Board of Psychology. Associate registrants (AMFT, ASW, APCC) practice under supervision. For video sessions, a therapist generally must be licensed in the state where you are located during the session, so sessions taken while you are outside California, including across the border, may not be possible with a California only license. Coverage in San Diego

San Diego residents commonly use employer plans, Covered California plans, TRICARE or Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal mental health benefits may be offered through a Medi-Cal managed care plan or through the county's mental health plan, depending on the kind of care, and the plan can explain which applies. For people paying out of pocket, the practice sets the fee; general national ranges of roughly 100 to 250 USD per session give only a rough idea. More in therapist that takes insurance and Medicaid.

Questions to ask in San Diego

  • Do you accept TRICARE, Medi-Cal or my employer plan?
  • Do you have experience working with military families or veterans, if that matters to me?
  • Is your office in the city, North County or the South Bay?
  • Can we meet online when I am away from home, as long as I am in California?
  • Are you fully licensed or a registered associate?

Do San Diego therapists take TRICARE

Some do. Ask the practice, and check TRICARE's own provider resources.

Is North County included

Yes. Search Carlsbad, Oceanside, Escondido or any North County ZIP code.

Can I continue online sessions while I am in Mexico

A therapist generally must be allowed to practice where you are located during the session. Ask your therapist before you travel.
