NearbyTherapy

ADHD therapist near me, for adults, teens and children

People look for an ADHD therapist at very different moments: a parent after a conversation with a teacher, a college student falling behind, or an adult who has started to wonder about lifelong patterns of focus and time. NearbyTherapy helps you find licensed professionals near you and sort out who does what, so the first calls are easier.

Evaluation, therapy and medication are often separate roles

ADHD care can involve different professionals, and knowing who does what saves time on the phone.

  • Evaluation. A formal ADHD evaluation is often done by a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a pediatrician or another qualified clinician. Some psychologists offer full neuropsychological testing, which takes several appointments.
  • Therapy. Licensed therapists may work with people on organization, routines, emotions, relationships and the stress that often comes with these challenges.
  • Medication. Only licensed prescribers, such as psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, pediatricians and primary care providers, can talk with you about medication.

NearbyTherapy does not evaluate anyone or suggest which of these you need. It helps you find people who offer each role near you.

What therapy with an ADHD focus can look like

Therapists who list ADHD often take a practical, structured approach. Sessions may involve looking at how a typical day actually unfolds, planning systems, managing time and tasks, and the feelings that come with repeated frustration. Cognitive behavioural therapy adapted for adult ADHD is one structured approach some clinicians use. For children, therapists frequently work with parents on routines and communication, and sometimes coordinate with schools at the family's request.

Some clinicians also mention ADHD coaching. Coaching is not a licensed profession on its own, so if you are paying a licensed therapist, ask what is therapy and what is coaching in their sessions.

Useful questions for an ADHD provider

  • Do you do evaluations, therapy, or both?
  • Which ages do you work with?
  • How long does an evaluation take, and what does it cost?
  • What does a typical therapy session with you focus on?
  • Do you coordinate with prescribers or schools when a client asks?
  • Do you offer reminders, online sessions or flexible scheduling?

If keeping track of calls is part of the challenge, writing your questions down or using the inquiry form can help.

What ADHD care can cost

Therapy sessions are usually billed as outpatient psychotherapy. Evaluations are billed differently, can involve several hours of testing, and may or may not be covered depending on your plan. Ask your insurer whether testing needs prior authorization, and ask the provider for a written estimate. If you pay yourself, providers generally must give you a Good Faith Estimate.

Can a therapist diagnose ADHD?

Some licensed clinicians, often psychologists, perform formal ADHD evaluations. Others focus on therapy only. Ask each provider whether evaluation is part of their practice.

Do adults see ADHD therapists?

Yes. Many therapists work with adults, and some focus mainly on adults who are looking at ADHD for the first time.

Can I see an ADHD therapist online?

Many therapists offer online sessions. Formal testing is sometimes done in person, so ask how the provider handles it.

Does NearbyTherapy have an ADHD quiz?

No. We do not offer quizzes or self-assessments. A licensed clinician can talk with you about your concerns.
