Therapist license verification behind every verified badge

The "License verified" badge on a claimed profile means one thing: the NPI, license number and license state on that profile match public records. Here is exactly how the check works, what happens when something does not match, and how the badge stays current.

Why we verify before a profile goes live

People choosing a therapist need to trust that the credentials they read are real. Because our listings come from a public federal registry, anyone could try to claim a profile that is not theirs. Verification protects patients, and it protects you from someone else editing the listing that carries your name and NPI.

How the check works, step by step

  • You find your listing on the claim your therapist profile page with your NPI number, or with your first name, last name and state.
  • You create your account and confirm your email address with a six digit code. The confirmed email becomes the contact for your claimed profile.
  • We match the NPI you claim against the NPPES NPI Registry, maintained by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and confirm that the record is active and belongs to an individual provider with a behavioral health taxonomy.
  • We compare your license number and license state with the license fields in the registry record.
  • We compare the same license number and state with the public license lookup of your state licensing board, where the board offers one, and confirm that the license is listed as active.
  • When everything matches, your profile shows the "License verified" badge and becomes editable as a claimed profile.

What the badge does and does not say

The badge confirms that the identity and license data match the registry and the state board lookup at the time of the check. It is not an endorsement of any provider, and it does not describe clinical quality or fit. Patients should still ask each provider about their training, approach and experience.

When the data does not match

Records are sometimes out of date. A license may have been renewed with a new number, a provider may have moved states, or the registry may not hold a license number at all. When something does not match, the profile stays unclaimed and unverified, and we email you at your confirmed address with what did not match.

  • If your NPPES record is out of date, update it with NPPES. The change reaches our directory with the next monthly refresh.
  • If your state board lists your license differently, reply with the license number and state exactly as the board shows them.
  • If the listing is not yours or contains an error, use the request a correction or removal page.

We never mark a profile as verified on the strength of a claim alone.

Monthly re-checks keep the badge current

The NPPES registry is published as a new file every month, and our directory refreshes with it. On each refresh, verified profiles are checked again. If an NPI becomes deactivated or the license data in the registry no longer matches, the badge is removed and we email you so you can correct it. A deactivated NPI is hidden from search.

What we store from the check

We store the NPI, the license number and state, the date of the last check and the result. We do not store mailing addresses from the registry, and we do not ask for copies of your license or identity documents. More detail is on the data sources page and in our privacy policy.

How long does license verification take

The check starts as soon as your email is confirmed. We email you when the badge is on your profile or when something needs your attention.

My license number is missing from the registry

Many NPPES records do not include a license number. Reply to our email with the license number and state as shown by your state board, and we compare them with the board lookup.

I am licensed in more than one state

Each license that appears in your registry record or that you send us is checked separately. Your profile shows the states where verification matched.

Does verification cost extra

No. Verification is part of every plan, from Solo to Clinic.
