Therapists in Arizona, licenses, AHCCCS and local search

Arizona has two separate boards for mental health professionals and its own Medicaid system called AHCCCS. Whether you live in Phoenix year round or spend the winter months in the state, this guide explains what to look for in an Arizona therapist.

AHCCCS and other coverage

AHCCCS, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, is Arizona's Medicaid program. Most members receive behavioral health services through an AHCCCS health plan, and the plan can tell you which providers are in network. People with commercial insurance, Medicare or TRICARE should ask the practice which plans it accepts. Our Medicaid therapist guide has general questions to ask.

Seasonal residents and online sessions

A therapist generally must be licensed in the state where you are located during the session. If you spend part of the year in Arizona, your therapist back home may need an Arizona license to see you online while you are here, so ask before you travel. The same works in reverse for Arizona residents who leave for the summer.

What Arizona listings show

Claimed profiles show a "License verified" badge and the therapist's own details, and they match concern and insurance filters. Below them, NPPES NPI Registry entries list the provider's name, credential, practice address and phone.
