Not a crisis service. Call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency.
EMDR is a method, not a license, so in Chicago it is offered by counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists and psychologists who have completed additional training. This page describes what EMDR is in factual terms, what a typical course of sessions looks like, which questions help you check a clinician's training, and how to search for one in the city.
Choose EMDR as the approach, enter a Chicago ZIP code, and pick in person or online.
The approach filter uses details therapists add to their own profile, so EMDR results come from claimed profiles only. They are listed first with a "License verified" badge, the training and approaches the therapist describes, fees and format. Below, "More licensed providers in Chicago" lists other licensed clinicians from the NPPES NPI Registry with name, credential, practice address and phone. The registry does not record therapy methods, so call to ask whether a provider offers EMDR.
Details not yet confirmed by the provider. Call to ask about insurance and fees.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It was developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. Sessions use what practitioners call bilateral stimulation, most often guided side to side eye movements, and sometimes alternating taps or tones, while the client brings a specific memory to mind. This is a description of the method, not a statement about whether it suits any particular person; only a licensed clinician who knows you can discuss that.
The standard EMDR protocol is described in eight phases:
Clinicians pace these phases differently, and the early phases can take several sessions. Ask how a given therapist works. The general page on EMDR therapy has more background.
EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) sets standards for basic EMDR training and offers a separate certification for clinicians with additional experience and consultation. A Chicago therapist may describe themselves as EMDR trained or as EMDRIA certified, and those are different levels. The clinician should also hold an Illinois license from IDFPR, such as LCPC, LCSW, LMFT or licensed clinical psychologist. Read therapists in Illinois for what those letters mean.
Clinicians offering EMDR practice across the city, from the Loop and River North to Lincoln Park, Evanston and Oak Park. Some therapists also offer EMDR by video and can explain how they adapt it on screen. For online sessions, a therapist generally must be licensed in the state where you are located during the session. If you are looking for other approaches or concerns in the city, start at therapist Chicago.
EMDR sessions are sometimes scheduled for longer than a standard hour, and fees follow that. Whether insurance covers a session usually depends on your plan and the clinician's network status, not on the method. Ask the practice, and see therapist that takes insurance and Medicaid for general questions.
Licensed clinicians such as LCPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs and psychologists who have completed EMDR training.
Trained usually means basic training is complete. EMDRIA certification is a separate credential that requires additional experience and consultation.
Some therapists offer it by video. Ask how they set it up.
NearbyTherapy is a directory, not an emergency service. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline). In an emergency, call 911.
Claim your listing, add EMDR to your approaches and describe your training level.
