Couples counseling NYC, finding a therapist who fits two schedules

Booking couples counseling in New York City means coordinating two jobs, two commutes and sometimes child care before anyone talks about the relationship itself. This guide helps partners in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island find licensed therapists who work with couples, and choose between an office both of you can reach and sessions by video.

Couples therapists in New York City

The couples filter relies on information therapists enter themselves, so it matches claimed profiles only. Those come first, each with a "License verified" badge and the therapist's own notes on relationship work, fees and format. Registry listings for New York City follow under "More licensed providers in New York City", showing name, credential, practice address and phone. Many of them may see couples too, so call and ask.

Who offers couples counseling in the city

Relationship therapy in New York is not limited to one license. You will find it offered by:

  • LMFTs, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, whose training centers on relationships and family systems (marriage and family therapists)
  • LCSWs, clinical social workers, many of whom see couples (clinical social workers)
  • LMHCs, licensed mental health counselors, the New York counseling license
  • Licensed psychologists (psychologists)

All of these are issued by the NYS Education Department, Office of the Professions, which has a public license lookup. The license tells you about training and oversight; the profile and a first call tell you whether the person focuses on couples.

Making sessions work in a busy city

Practices often hold evening and early morning slots for couples because that is when two working people are free, and those slots fill first. If one of you works in Midtown and the other in Long Island City or Downtown Brooklyn, a practice in between may be the realistic choice. Video sessions are another route, with each partner joining from home or even from two separate rooms.

For online sessions, a therapist generally must be licensed in the state where each of you is located during the session. If one partner commutes from New Jersey or Connecticut, mention it, because it affects who can see you together online.

Some therapists also offer premarital counseling for engaged couples, or occasional individual sessions alongside joint ones. Ask how they handle that.

Paying for couples counseling in NYC

Couples sessions are sometimes longer than individual ones, and the fee usually reflects that. Insurance coverage for relationship counseling is uneven: some plans cover family or couples sessions in limited situations, others do not, and some therapists are out of network and offer a receipt for possible reimbursement. Ask your plan and the practice before the first session. Our guide on how much couples counseling costs explains the general factors.

What to ask a New York couples therapist

  • How much of your practice is couples work?
  • Do both of us need to attend every session?
  • Do you hold evening or weekend appointments?
  • Can we mix office visits with video sessions?
  • What is your fee for a couples session, and how long does it last?
